about

In Mulieribus: LIVE II is a follow-up disc to In Mulieribus’ first live album and presents 10 of our favorite tracks from our performances between 2009 and 2014. The CD opens with an invitatory psalm for the Feast of Saint James, Venite Omnes Cristicole from the great compendium, Codex Calixtinus. Following are selections by several masters of the Renaissance period, two of which are eloquent settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, texts traditionally sung during Holy Week. Elzéar Genet Carpentras effectively captures the penitential character of one verse in Recordare Domine, while the sublime setting by Antoine Brumel is powerfully evocative of the imagery contained in the poetry. Ave Verum Corpus by Josquin Des Préz displays the composer’s ingenuity in converting a pre-existing chant melody into a polyphonic work of art. The inimitable English Renaissance composer William Byrd is represented by two jubilant works: From Virgin’s Womb, a carol for Christmas day, and Alleluia. Vespere Autem Sabbati, an antiphon for Vespers on Easter eve. Two Christmas carols present rather unique perspectives to the Christmas story; Thys Endere Nyghth from the 16th century British Library Manuscript depicts a conversation between the Virgin Mary and the newly born Christ child as she sings him a lullaby, while Mervele Noght from the 15th century Ritson Manuscript portrays both Joseph's bewilderment and distress at Mary's pregnancy and his assurance and enlightenment by an angel. Included also on the album are contemporary works for Christmas written specifically for In Mulieribus; the mesmerizing Hodie Christus Natus Est, a setting of the familiar Christmas chant by Portland-based composer Craig Kingsbury, and Cum Natus Esset Lesus by celebrated British composer Ivan Moody, which captures both the serenity and drama of the Christmas story.
